RUSS Art

Russell (Russ) is a danish artist born in Tallin, Estonia ( USSR ).

His paintings are rooted in a fascination with abstract expressionism, of which particularly Mark Rothko (1903-1970) has served as a great source of inspiration.

That said, the work is not easily categorized within a particular style of painting: the earliest works were all small-scaled figurative paintings. Later, abstract colour surfaces became a more dominant motif, broken only by a few figurative elements, while recent works solely consist of colours and surfaces - the so-called Colour Gaps.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a painter inspired by the mysteries of the physical world.

My paintings celebrate colours in "the void". That is, the spaces between

incarnate reality; a space commonly believed to be empty.

In my artistic practice I am interested in the meanings and potentials of

expanding consciousness.
